This structured class discussion activity gives every student a real role — Speaker, Moderator, or Commentator.
The Class Discussion Pack is a no-prep, two-day discussion format for high school (grades 9–12) that works with any subject and any discussion question.
Built for student-led discussions with built-in accountability, this resource transforms even your quietest class into a functioning newsroom.
Most class discussions have the same problem: five students carry the conversation and everyone else checks out. The Newsroom fixes that by giving every student a specific job with specific responsibilities — before, during, and after the discussion. Nobody is a spectator.
THE THREE ROLES:
🎙 Speaker — shares ideas, defends positions, engages with other Speakers using evidence
📋 Moderator — tracks arguments on a desk notes sheet, notices gaps, and redirects the conversation when it stalls or goes off track
💬 Commentator — provides live analysis on a class Padlet in real time, connecting ideas to real life and capturing the moments worth remembering
You're the producer: monitoring everything from the outside, knowing when to pull something into the room and when to let it run.
HOW IT WORKS:
Day 1 — Prep (15–20 min)
Students receive their role cards and desk notes. Speakers prep arguments and anticipate counterarguments. Commentators predict the hottest takes and prepare their analysis. Moderators think through redirect questions for when the conversation stalls.
Day 2 — Discussion Day (full period)
Speakers argue on the floor → Moderators track and redirect → Commentators post live analysis to Padlet. Every role is active the entire time. No dead time. No spectators.
